For every wound, a
balm. For every sorrow, a cheer. For every storm, a calm. For every thirst, a
beer. If any rendition of this phrase has recently done the rounds
anywhere in your vicinity, it would be safe to assume that the
celebrations for St. Patrick's Day just passed by. Also, it is known
to all that
celebrations and feasts are few of those moments that Bollywood never
gives a
miss, and neither does the BollyCurry team. This St. Patrick's Day, when
the
thought of avoiding alcohol was floating around the world, we at
BollyCurry decided to guide you through as to why this might be a good idea after all.
The 1984 drama film
starring the legendary actors
Amitabh Bachchan and
Jaya Pradha in lead roles is
of the best suited examples of the damages of alcohol not only to oneself, but
to the people around him as well. Vicky Kapoor (
Amitabh Bachchan) is a rich
spoilt brat, with additional alcoholism issues that he gained as a result of
his father's neglect. Vicky wants to find solace in the confines of his drunken
state, but as the movie progresses, he realises that alcohol is a solution only
in chemistry labs. In real life, consciousness and a will power to make
something out of him helps him overcome the miserable life that he would put
himself through.
Devdas and alcohol
are two words that are synonymous in the truest sense. It is hard to imagine a
Devdas sans his bottle of liquor and a sad expression clouding his face.
Bollywood has had its share of the man in all generations, be it the acclaimed
actor
Dilip Kumar in Bimal Roy's
Devdas (1955), or the notable
actor
Abhay Deol in
Anurag Kashyap's
Dev D (2009). We shall
rather pick
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's rendition of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's
novel of the same name,
Devdas (2002). Starring the Bollywood
maestros
Shah Rukh Khan,
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and
Madhuri Dixit Nene
in
the lead roles, the movie is one of the best that the industry has seen.
Devdas turns into a full-time alcoholic at the loss of his beloved
Paro. His sad state of self-pity when his only reliable companion is
alcohol
ultimately leads him to an emotional breakdown and he deteriorates into
nothingness.
Marriage is often
cited to be life's biggest mistake by one and all (jokingly so), but what if it
is a consequent result of getting indulged into another mistake, a state of
intoxication due to the excessive consumption of alcohol to do away with life's
miseries? Rahul Kapoor (
Imran Khan) and Riana Braganza (
Kareena Kapoor) end up
falling prey of the same when they get married to each other in
Shakun Batra's
romantic comedy
Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (2012). Thanks to the
surfeit of drinks in their system, they become a part of an unwanted marriage
to a stranger and want to get it annulled as soon as possible.
One of the most
successful movies of 2014,
Mohit Suri's romantic musical drama left no stone
unturned to do justice in portraying the situations countered by an alcoholic.
Eminent actor
Aditya Roy Kapur played the successful singer Rahul Jaykar whose
career starts descending as a result of his alcoholism. Aarohi (Shraddha
Kapoor) enters as a wave of fresh air and turns a new leaflet in the book of
his life. She tried to start things from a new scale, but Rahul's helplessness
and despair pulls him back towards his addiction and he ends his life in the
process of passing on his musical legacy to Aarohi.
A swift glance at
the aforementioned movies, along with those whose track loosely revolves around
alcoholism is a witness to the fact that there is no other end of such a story,
except for gloom and lifelong desolation. Alcohol is man's worst enemy and despite
it being said that we must love our enemies, this one is better left far-flung.
