Bhupinder singhGhazal singer Bhupinder Singh disagrees with those who say that classical music and ghazals are on the decline due to falling numbers of listeners. In fact, he says the youths make the biggest chunk of ghazal lovers.

"The younger generation listens to classical music and ghazals. If you go to a ghazal concert, there are no old people. In fact, middle-aged and young school and college-going people are present. They have beautiful requests," Bhupinder said here Friday.

He performed with his singer wife Mitali at a concert organised to pay tribute to Jagjit Singh on the late ghazal maestro's 72nd birth anniversary Friday.

"It seems like they (young people) know about Urdu and ghazals. Ghazals can never die... Every artist tries to make the best ghazals, which can be enjoyed by the generations to come. Youngsters love ghazals," he added.

Mitali, who mostly sings classical numbers apart from ghazals, said the audience hardly has a choice nowadays, especially with the kind of TV shows on air.

"Our basic music is ghazals, classical music and thumri. We do four to five shows in a month and around 25,000 people come for some good music. So, it is just that on TV they don't have a choice and they don't know where to listen to them. All channels are only doing paid promotions. It is high time the government takes initiative to preserve Indian music," Mitali said.

Bhupinder has sung some memorable songs like "Dil dhoondta hai" ("Mausam"), "Kisi nazar ko tera intezar aaj bhi hai" ("Aitbaar"), "Naam gum jaayega" ("Kinara") and "Huzoor is kadar bhi" ("Masoom").
