Cocktail sari for Gaga - if only!

New Delhi, Oct 28 (IANS) Lady Gaga may be known for her outrageous attires, but how about a cocktail sari for the flamboyant singer? And handwoven kurta-pyjama for members of rock band Metallica? That's how Indian designers want to dress up these international pop icons.

Gaga is a newsmaker, thanks to her outfits. Be it appearing in a beef bikini on the cover of Japan's Men's Vogue magazine or her bubble dress, her choice of clothes has always attracted media attention. It seems while stepping out, she is not concerned whether her clothes take her fashion forward.

But Indian designers have a much more sombre and toned down look for her in their mind.

Jattinn Kochhar told IANS: 'For Lady Gaga, I will go for something different from her usual gimmicky clothes. It will be a stunning cocktail sari with a bikini blouse. The fabrics will be georgette, in lilac hues, with Swarovski crystal work. The other option will be a feminine off-shoulder chiffon gown.'

After setting the stage afire abroad, Gaga is all set to rock the Indian capital when she performs at the finale of the Formula One after-party at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida Oct 30.

The 25-year-old's dress drama is unlimited - Gaga created a furore with her see-through lingerie and her meat dress at the MTV Music Video awards.

But Varija Bajaj is nonchalant and wants to dress her in Indo-Western fusion dresses, with some frills swirling around her.

'I would like to enhance her personality by giving her same funky clothes like ankle-length ghagra-cum-skirt teamed up with a choli, with lots of junk jewellery like anklet, heavy metal bangles,' she said, adding the sari is also on her wish list.

'And, of course, if she is in India, then it will be interesting to see her in a sari. I want her to be seen in a sari which will be draped differently, like a shorter sari with longer petticoats. The petticoats will have a lot of frills at the border,' added Bajaj.

Young designer Nida Mehmood has something different on her mind.

She feels the 'Born this Way' hitmaker symbolises a larger than life image; so Nida's Tamasha collection, which she showcased at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion week, can jazz up her personality. But she doesn't rule out nine yards as well.

'Her persona is not to be missed and she is never scared to speak her mind - neither in spirit nor in mood. I totally feel the garments from my current collection - the great Indian Bohemian Tamasha - would be apt for her.'

If Nida wants to design 'flare tops, trousers, dresses and jumpsuits', she also wants to drape Gaga 'with a sari over jeans with innovative headgear'.

Metallica, which is visiting India as part of Vladivar F1 Rocks Friday, are known for their glam rock style clothing. Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield and Robert Trujillo -- members of the American heavy metal band are often seen in their signature black attire with heavy metal style fashion and accessories.

Bajaj says he would try to bring down their loud image with soft and subtle colours in traditional Indian garments like the kurta-pyjama.

'I will give them a cotton kurta-pyjama made differently. This will give them a soft and soothing look that will be very different from their original character. The colours will be bright, fuchsia, olives and turquoise,' she said.

Since the band is known for their hard-hitting soundtracks like 'Death Magnetic' and 'My Apocalypse', designer Gaurav Jai says to personify the same character, leather will be a perfect choice.

'There will only be leather and leather for them. Also, breaking their stereotyped look, I will give them fresh-coloured shirts with metallic thread work,' he said.

Smita Singh Rathore, of the label 11.11 by CellDSGN, is a diehard Metallica fan and she wants to see her pop icons in bling and sequins.

'I am very excited about the Metallica visit as they have been my favourite since childhood. I would choose to give them the rock style look with a lot of bling and sequins,' she said.
