Mumbai, May 10 (IANS) Bollywood singer Shaan was Tuesday appointed the tobacco control ambassador for the ministry of health and family welfare to promote the message of tobacco abstinence.

Shaan also released his new music single 'Life se panga mat le yaar', a track targeted at youth, urging them to lead a tobacco-free life.

The launch event was organised by the health ministry in association with Salaam Bombay Foundation at the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital here.

Shot in Kala Chowki slum area of Parel in central Mumbai, the song has lyrics penned by Rekha Nigam. The video shows Shaan dancing with children and encouraging them to take problems in their stride instead of worsening the situation by consuming tobacco.

'Tobacco use is a 'panga' (problem) they can live without. The entire video has a very pro-life stance, is youth centric and speaks of their dreams and aspirations,' an official said.

The official added that smoking and tobacco consumption kills 1.6 million people worldwide every year.

The ministry's Joint Secretary B.K. Prasad said the government was seriously implementing the Tobacco Control Programme, but admitted that complete success was still some distance away.

'Tobacco usage is deep rooted in the Indian society and the menace can be overcome only through greater awareness and people participation in the anti-tobacco programme,' he said.
