A wayward husband (Amjad Khan) leaves his wife (Nirupa Roy) and their two sons. The boys are separated due to tragic circumstances and grow up in very different environments. One of them, Vijay, (Amitabh Bachchan) becomes a street-wise, small-time gangster while the other, Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) becomes a respected police officer. Their mother, who lives with Ravi, still refuses to believe that her husband will never come back. How the family is reunited makes up the rest of the plot of this film. Parveen Babi and Rekha play the leading ladies.
