International film fest kick-starts in Mumbai

Mumbai, March 6 (IANS) The 10th International Film Festival, organised by Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI), got off to a colourful start Thursday evening at the IMAX theatre in Mumbai.

Noted Bollywood film-maker Yash Chopra was the chief guest at the inaugural function, attended by movie buffs and delegates from across the world.

The week-long festival has received 84 entries.

The opening ceremony was followed by a screening of Polish movie 'Katyn', directed by Andrej Wajda.

The festival will also celebrate 50 years of Wajda's film career and screen some of his other masterpieces, including 'Man of Marble', ' Man of Iron', 'Landscape After The Battle', 'Hunting Flies', 'Conductor' and 'Ashes and Diamonds'.

Celebrated Spanish director Carlos Saura will be honoured with International Lifetime Achievement award.

There is also a retrospective section where a number of well-known movies will be screened, including those of celebrated Indian film-maker Ritwik Ghatak.

Films of great masters like Ingmar Bergman, Michaelangelo Antonioni and Ousmani Sembena would also be screened.

The closing film is 'Morning Forests' from Japan.
