In recent years, franchises and sequels have become a growing trend in Bollywood. Since the advent of the year 2000, franchises have found a home in Bollywood.
Dhoom Series,
Raaz Series and
Golmaal Series are examples of some successful movie franchises. With movies like
Rock On 2,
Force 2,
Tum Bin 2 and
Kahaani 2 releasing in 2016, sequels have also seemed to have caught up to the hype. Hence, it is not surprising that there is slew of franchises and sequels releasing this year. Here are a few movies that are either sequels or a part of franchise that we, at BollyCurry, are looking forward to watch this year.
Jolly LLB 2 is the sequel of
Jolly L.L.B. (2013) and will be releasing on the 10th February, 2017. While the original had
Arshad Warsi as lead, the sequel has
Akshay Kumar in the titular role. The original had turned out to be a hit and a cult classic. Therefore, it is not surprising that people are eager to watch the sequel with high expectations. Both movies are written and directed by
Subhash Kapoor and produced by Fox Star Studios.
Badrinath ki Dulhaniya
Releasing on March 10, 2017 is the second instalment of the franchise that began with
Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya (2014). Both movies are directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by
Karan Johar, under the Dharma Productions banner. Both movies star
Alia Bhatt and
Varun Dhawan, but they are playing different characters in the sequel. Unlike the prequel though, the sequel has a darker romance with many twists and turns. Due to the prequel being a hit, the anticipation for the sequel is quite prominent.
Baahubali: The Conclusion is the second part to the movie
Baahubali: The Beginning (2015). Releasing on 28th April, it is one of the few regional movies that is highly anticipated by almost the whole of India. The first part of this franchise was one of the top grossing hits of 2015. The movies are made in Tamil and Telugu languages simultaneously, but the first part was released in various languages, including Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi, which was presented by
Karan Johar under Dharma Productions.
Aankhen 2
October seems to be the month made for sequels and franchises as four of them will be released in this one month. One of them releasing on 13th October is the sequel to the heist thriller, and the second highest grossing movie of 2002, Aankhen. Aankhen was adapted from the play "Andhalo Pato" written by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, who also directed the movie. The original was well loved by the viewers, hence the anticipation for the sequel, which has been in works since 2006, is quite high.
Golmaal Again
Releasing on the 19th of October is the fourth movie in the
Golmaal franchise,
Golmaal Again. The first three movies were
Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006),
Golmaal Returns (2008) and
Golmaal 3 (2010). The movie will see
Ajay Devgn,
Arshad Warsi and
Tusshar Kapoor reprising their roles as Gopal, Madhav and Lucky respectively. All three movies of the franchise were laughter riots and the same is expected from the fourth. The series is directed by
Rohit Shetty and produced by Dhillin Mehta.
Releasing on the same day as
Golmaal Again is
2.0, sequel to Tamil film
Enthiran (2010) which was released in Hindi as
Robot. The sequel is being made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi; and it stars Rajnikanth, with
Akshay Kumar and
Amy Jackson playing supporting roles. The director and writer of both movies is S. Shankar, while the music has been provided by
A.R. Rahman. The explosive combo of Rajnikanth and Rahman has already raised the expectations of the masses, but with the addition of
Akshay Kumar as an antagonist, the bar for this movie has been set quite high.
The aforementioned list of movies are those we are eagerly awaiting from the category of sequels and franchises. There are few others that also will be releasing in 2017, like Commando 2, sequel to Commando (2013) and Hate Story 4, part of the Hate Story franchise.
BollyCurry hopes that these movies are more successful than their predecessors, and wishes that they surpass our expectations. What do you think of our list? Is there any other movie releasing this year that you think should be added to this list? Please let us know through your comments.
