The year has almost come to a close and we, at BollyCurry, are wondering whether or not Cineplexes are the medium to exhibit one's own patriotism. As the previous years, Bollywood has thrown us off track with the chain of movies aligned up for release next year. Saying that we can't wait would be an understatement; if we had access to Einstein's brain we'd probably tack together a time machine and fast forward to the future. But that is close to impossible, and all thanks to NaMo's new economic strategy, our patience level has gone up a notch. To kill time, ours and our readers', we have listed a couple of movies we definitely will not miss out on in 2017. Take a look and see if they make it to your list as well.
Remakes are never out of fashion, especially in Bollywood.
Karan Johar's production venture
OK Jaanu, directed by
Shaad Ali, is yet another remake which has been the talk of B-town for quite a long time. Partially because the movie will see
Aditya Roy Kapur and
Shraddha Kapoor join forces for the second time; and partly because the movie is the official remake of Mani Ratnam's hit Tamil film,
O Kadhal Kanmani (2015), starring Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen. The trailer, which released last week, saw a mixed array of reviews. Anyone who has not seen the original movie will imbibe the trailer and probably the movie, as it deals with the inevitable choice (read dilemma) today's youngsters face - love or career? The question hovering around
OK Jaanu is - will it be able to live up to its original? Hit the theatres near you on January 13, 2017 to find out.
Shah Rukh Khan starrer:
Raees, which tells the story of a bootlegger
Raees Alam, is all set to hit the theatres on January 25th next year. This action crime thriller, directed by
Rahul Dholakia, was rumoured to be based on the life of a criminal, Abdul Latif. However, the makers have altogether denied such rumours. Pakistani actress,
Mahira Khan, will essay Khan's love interest, while
Nawazuddin Siddiqui will be seen as a police official, ACP Majmudar. The trailer, which was released on December 7th, went on to create frenzy almost overnight. Despite the controversies surrounding the movie, from the inclusion of Pakistani actress,
Mahira Khan; to the latest one being Shia community's objection against a particular shot where Khan jumps over a procession, the movie's popularity remains unaffected.
Kaabil, directed by Sanjay Gupta and produced by
Rakesh Roshan, will grace the silver screens worldwide on January 25, 2017.
Hrithik Roshan and
Yami Gautam, the lead pair, will essay a blind couple, Rohan Bhatnagar and Sue Bhatnagar respectively. The movie is almost in the verge of legal trouble as its trailer is said to have blatant similarities with the Netflix show,
Daredevil. Rumours are going around saying that Netflix may, or may not, sue the makers of
Kaabil. Roshan, whose last outing,
Mohenjo Daro (2016), was a box office flop, desperately needs to make an impact, and that too, a big one via
Kaabil. However, that does not seem like an easy task as the movie will have a head on clash with Khan's
Raees. Is
Kaabil as capable as its name suggests? Only time will tell.
Salman Khan's next Bollywood venture,
Tubelight, is a historical war drama written and directed by
Kabir Khan. Set against the backdrop of 1960 Sino-Indian war,
Tubelight will depict the story of an Indian man who falls in love with a Chinese girl. Zhu Zhu, a Chinese actress, will essay the female lead. The movie also features
Sohail Khan,
Paras Arora and
Shatrughan Sinha in supporting roles. Both the Khans had previously collaborated for two movies -
Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and
Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), of which the latter went on to be one of the biggest hit in Khan's career. Will
Tubelight be the next big thing in Bollywood? We have to wait till June 26, 2017 to find out.
Padmavati
The golden trio of Bollywood is back together for yet another film so you can't expect BollyCurry to stay hush, can you? Yes, we're hinting at
Sanjay Leela Bhansali,
Deepika Padukone and
Ranveer Singh's upcoming period drama,
Padmavati, which also features
Shahid Kapoor in a prominent role. This movie is a dramatized account the 1303 siege of Chittor fort by Alauddin Khilji (
Ranveer Singh) and his obsession with queen Padmavati (
Deepika Padukone), the wife of Rana Rawal Ratan Singh (
Shahid Kapoor). The movie, considered to be Bhansali's magnum opus, is scheduled for release on the 17th of November, 2017. If you have a taste for grandeur, splendour and sheer brilliance, you can't miss this one!
With that, our list comes to a close. 2016 has been a roller coaster year with loads of drama, fun and emotions. Because it's India and because it's Bollywood, we're sure 2017 would be nothing less. Taking into account the number of movies lined up for next year, we had a very hard time picking out just five. Since the dreaded deed is done, we are off to YouTube to watch the trailers we haven't watched, and we encourage our viewers to do the same. While the videos load, we urge you to comment below about the movies you are dying to watch. Until 2017, have a happy festive season!
