Today marks the birthday of one of the most well known damsels
of Bollywood, the stunning
Karisma Kapoor whose name is a synonym for
glitz, glamour and glorious beauty.
Born in Mumbai with a silver
spoon in her mouth, this belle is the grand daughter of the famous actor
and filmmaker Raj Kapoor, the elder daughter of yesteryear actors
Randhir Kapoor and Babita and sister of Kareena Kapoor Khan. Despite
hailing from such a film orientated family, like all actors, Kapoor
still went through the phase of struggle, which has ultimately brought
out the best in her talents.
In 1991, Kapoor took a leap of faith when she quit school to enter the Indian movie industry with her debut film
Prem Qaidi, which was an average hit at the box office. She then starred in films such as
Jigar (1992),
Anaari (1993),
Raja Babu (1994),
Adnaz Apna Apna
(1994), all of which received mixed reviews at the box office. She
continued to act in various movies until 1996 when she rose to fame with
Raja Hindustani, a movie for which she won her first Filmfare
Award for Best Actress and became one of the highest paid actresses of
her time. Since then, her ladder of success kept rising higher with
releases such as
Jeet (1996),
Dil To Pagal Hai (1997),
Biwi No.1 (1999) and
Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999).
In 2000,
Karisma Kapoor received her second Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her outstanding performance in
Fiza, followed by
Zubeidaa (2001), for which she won the Filmfare Award Critics for Best Actress. After this, Kapoor went on to do films such as
Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love (2001),
Shakti: The Power (2002) and
Rishtey
(2002). From 2003, she decided to take a step back from being a full
time actor as she began appearing on the small screen with her debut
series
Karishma: The Miracles of Destiny, then as a judge for the dance show
Nach Baliye 4 in 2008 followed by more special appearances. She also featured in a song in
Om Shanti Om in 2007. Kapoor then made her comeback in Bollywood with
Dangerous Ishq in 2011 which didn't manage to please the critics or the audiences.
Kapoor
married industrialist Sanjay Kapur, CEO of Sixt India in 2003. The two
have a daughter and a son together. After 11 years of marriage, they
parted ways in 2014.
