Today, BollyCurry gathers its readers to celebrate
the birthday of a bold and intelligent film director, screenwriter and
producer, Mahesh Bhatt.
Bhatt was born in the year 1949 to Gujarati Nanabhai Bhatt and
actress Shirin Mohammad Ali. Bhatt started to work for Raj Khosla as an
assistant director, and it was during this period that he meet his first
wife, Kiran Bhatt. He later married actress
Soni Razdan.
Bhatt debuted as a director with
Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain (1974), but his first major break came with the film
Arth
(1982), which was inspired by his personal life. After that, he
successfully directed several critically acclaimed films, including
Saaransh (1984),
Janam (1985) and
Kaash
(1987). In 1987, Bhatt turned producer by setting up his own production
house "Vishesh Films", along with his brother Mukesh Bhatt. Under this
banner, he launched his daughter Pooja Bhatt with
Daddy (1989), and produced commercially successful films such as
Awaargi (1990) and
Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991). He went back to direction in 1993 for
Sir, that
starred Pooja Bhatt alongside Naseeruddin Shah, and the film won him
strong critical acclaim. The year 1994 marked Bhatt winning the National
Film Award-Special Jury Award for
Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993). Further in 1995, Bhatt turned to television and churned out several successful shows such as
A Mouthful of Sky and
Swabhimaan. After that, Bhatt took up screenwriting and dished out screenplays for over twenty movies, most notably
Raaz (2004),
Murder (2004),
Gangster (2006),
Murder 2 (2011) and
Murder 3 (2013).
Bhatt has inevitably taken Bollywood to a different level, a genre
which does not only focus on love and romance alone but also goes to the
depths of various horror adventures and historic mysteries.
