Today, the 10
th
of December, celebrates the birthday of a yesteryear model turned actress, Rati
Agnihotri. Born in the year 1960, the the ethereal beauty turns 53 this year.
Even though Agnihotri was born into a conservative
Punjabi family, she was allowed to pursue a career in modelling at
the age of ten and this formed the basic foundation of her route into
Bollywood. When her father had to shift to Madras due to work
commitments, she moved with him and completed the rest of her schooling
there. Luck favoured her one fine day as
she was noticed by Bharathiraja, a famous Tamil film director, who cast
her in
his next film as the leading lady. This catapulted her to fame, turning
her into a star overnight. She continued to act in many South Indian
movies, churning blockbuster hits after hits.
Agnihotri marked her debut in Bollywood with Ek
Duje Ke Liye (1981), a remake of a Telugu film. Though the film
did not do well at the theatres, she was appreciated for her role and
started receiving offers from many other Bollywood projects. Some of her
notable works include Farz aur Kanoon (1982), Coolie (1983), Tawaif (1985) and Hukumat (1987).
With her father's sudden
demise, things took a drastic turn in Agnihotri's life as she had to
settle down and
leave her career at the turn of its peak. She took wedding vows with
businessman Anil Virwani and later contributed her time in raising her
son, Tanuj Virwani. After a sabbatical of sixteen years, the dazzling
lady returned to
the limelight with some powerful and glamorous performances as a mother.
A few
films to list are Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi (2001), Yaadein (2001), Hum Tum (2004) and Luck (2009).
