Hailed as "the master of Sufi devotional music" and performing
to sold out concerts across the globe, it should be no surprise that this
month's Illuminated Artiste is the phenomenal Ustad
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
Music runs in the veins of Ustad Ji. Not only is he the nephew of the legendary
Ustad
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, but he is also the son of Ustad Farrukh Fateh Ali
Khan and the grandson of the legendary
qawali singer, Fateh Ali Khan. Ustad
Ji's brother and cousin are singers as well, and perform with him at his shows.
Being born in such a musical household meant it was no surprise that he held a
talent for singing. Now, Ustad
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is not only known for
qawali,
but also
ghazals and other light music. He has even become a well-known
name in Bollywood and Lollywood!
Fun fact: Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali
Khan started training at the age of 3 and had his first stage performance at
the age of 9.
Ustad Ji was trained by his uncle in the classical and
qawali
musical fields and was touring with his world famous group by the age of
fifteen. It was not long before he was performing solo songs at these
concerts and in the 90s, Ustad
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was singing in
Lollywood, and in
2004, he had his Bollywood debut with "Mann Ki Lagan" in
Paap.
His voice took everyone by storm and now there is not a single Bollywood fan
who would not know at least one of his songs. His music has reached across the
seas, and his concerts bring the audience to its feet. Blessed with a soulful
and stirring voice, Ustad
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a natural born performer and
