Today, the 16th of October, celebrates the birthday of the original 'Dream Girl' of Bollywood. Today,
Hema Malini turns 65.
Malini
was born into a Tamil Iyenger Brahmin family to V.S. Ramanujam
Chakravarthy and Jaya Chakravarthy. Her mother was a film producer and
this served as one of the main reasons why she left her education midway
to build a career in the field of acting. She debuted with Tamil movies
but had her first major breakthrough in Hindi cinema with Sapnon Ka Saudagar (1968) opposite Raj Kapoor.
From thereon, Malini was seen in many successful films such as Johny Mera Naam, Seeta Aur Geeta, Dreamgirl, Sanyasi, Dharmatma, Pratigya, Sholey, The Burning Train and Andha Kanoon. It has to be acknowledged that a majority of these films were opposite her
real life partner, Dharmendra, who she married in the year 1980. It is said that they fell in love during the shooting of Sholay. Malini and Dharmendra Singh Deol now have two children, actress Esha Deol and Ahana Deol while actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol are Malini's stepsons.
After taking a sabbatical from movies to concentrate on her family life, Malini returned to the silver screen in 2003 with Baghban. Costarring
Amitabh Bachchan, the film dealt with the issue of aging parents being
ignored by their own children. She continued to play smaller roles in
other films such as Veer Zaara, Baabul, Aarakshan and Tell Me O Kkhuda which she directed, produced and stared in herself.
Apart
from acting, Malini is also an exquisite dancer. Trained in
Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, she is also popular for performing at
live stage shows. One such event witnessed her performing at the
Khajuraho Dance Festival with her daughters.
