It's time to celebrate the birthday of the original
Khiladi of Bollywood, and he is none other than
Akshay Kumar!
Born in Amritsar on September 9th, 1967, Akshay was raised in Delhi's Chandni Chowk before moving to Mumbai. His father was an army officer and he has a sister, Alka Bhatia. From a very young age he was well-known as a performer, especially as a dancer. He completed his schooling from the Don Bosco School in Mumbai and then attended college at Guru Nanak Khalsa College, also in Mumbai. After graduation, he travelled all the way to Bangkok to study martial arts, upon obtaining a black belt in Taekwondo in India. While in Bangkok, he learned Muay Thai and worked as a chef and waiter both. When he came back to Mumbai, he initially taught martial arts before one of his students recommended him to do modelling, which soon led him to film studios and signing the movie Deedar. While this movie never took off, Akshay made his Bollywood acting debut with the 1991 film Saugandh and there has been no turning back since then. He went on to make his mark in the Khiladi series, as an action hero and later proved his mettle in comedy and romance as well.
Akshay is married to Twinkle Jatin Khanna, the daughter of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia. They got married on January 17, 2001 and had a son Aarav in September 2002. They recently had their daughter, Nitara, on September 25, 2012. The year 2004 witnessed Akshay being honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Award for his outstanding achievements in Bollywood. In 2008, Akshay was awarded the Honorary Doctrate of Law for his outstanding work in the film industry and contribution to social work by the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. He was also one of the 15 international celebrities invited for the Olympics torch-bearer rally to Canada. He was also the Brand Ambassador until the summer of 2012 for Canadian tourism.
Here's wishing the Khiladi Kumar a very happy birthday and much more success in the future!
