We live in the fast paced age of technology, which makes every walk of life a fast moving one.  Every field is starting to rely more heavily on technology nowadays! And Bollywood is not far behind, from the improvements in the behind-the-scene tech gadgets to the newest promotional apps, we're doing it all! But perhaps the best use of technology comes in the use of social media by your favorite celebs to connect with fans and also promote their upcoming works! So, in this article, BollyCurry proudly presents to you the close relationship that social media and our film industry has forged!

The first two things  that come to mind when thinking of Social Media are Facebook and Twitter. They play a vital role in every aspect of promoting a film or even during the pre-production phase of a movie.

These two social networking sites have the ability to spread any message to a larger population that traditional media can reach, and that too at a fraction of the time and cost! In earlier days, people used to wait for numerous hours or days in order to find out any information about their favorite stars or movies. However, in today's world, we hear about events as they're happening! We even have the ability to follow the most mundane things the celebs do! Another charming aspect of social media is its ability to attract mass audience and allow for a direct connection between them and the presenter! With such a powerful tool, we are even able to interact with and give direct feedback to the celebs! A thing that was unimaginable a mere few years ago!

The information presented here can be a diversified as well. Instead of banking on their on-screen looks or movie performances, actors can now use social media to wow audiences with their off-screen persona as well! Each and every update, image, or video that is shared acts to increase curiosity among the fans and thereby keeps them hooked. This, in turn, attracts an even larger audience and allows the celeb to reach an even bigger population! The diversified information may include the personal lives of Bollywood actors, any news about their favorite stars, their upcoming ventures, and it also gives them a better platform for a comfortable interaction with their fans! Fans can interact with their favorite celeb and feel even closer to them. This helps to create a more loyal fanbase!

Social media is also heavily used for marketing purposes. Nowadays, it is as important to advertise and promote any new venture via Twitter and Facebook, as it is to promote it on the Television. With more and more people, especially those residing outside of India, foregoing TV altogether and moving to the internet as their primary source of entertainment, it becomes even more imperative for filmmakers to make good use of social media to reach this audience!

Needless to say, social media is now one of the biggest components of a star's public image!
Therefore, lets have a look at the social media status of some of Bollywood's biggest:

  • Priyanka Chopra -Voted as Popular and Influential celebrity on Social media (Twitter).
  • Shah Rukh Khan - His twitter account being nominated for 4th Annual Shorty Awards 2012.
  • Amitabh Bachchan - Became the first person in the country to have more than 36 lakh followers on Twitter.
  • Shreya Goshal - Ranks 3rd on Facebook among Indian celebrities with more than 6 million fans following.
  • A.R. Rahman - Co-founded social media company "Quiki".

Not only individual celebs, but production houses and certain movies are also hogging the limelight in the social media realm. Jab Tak Hai Jaan reached a large audience and created much of the pre-release buzz with the help of fan shares on both Facebook and Twitter. Not only movies, but a reality show can also reach unprecedented heights of success due to social media and the best example of this is Aamir Khan's Maiden TV venture  Satyamev Jayate. The show reached a wide range of audience via social media and fans easily connected themselves in order to express their opinion about the participants.

Nonetheless, Krish 3 is taking the same social route. The trailers, first looks, and various other information regarding the movie is put up on Facebook walls and Twitter pages. Such sharing of information helps to increase the hype with the fans and followers on these sites and helps to advertise the movie well beyond traditional media's capacity!

Right from the beginning of the production of a movie to the stage of release, we can get status updates of the movies via social media. The fan pages or twitter accounts provide a  better medium of communication between fans and actors. Not only actors, but everyone associated with film making has envisaged the use of social media in a conventional manner. The information presented through it can be delivered at a fast rate globally and in a more satisfying manner for audiences. Thus social media acts to bridge the communication gap between fans and stars!

Well, there you have it folks! Don't forget to share with us your favorite form of social media and how you use it to stay connected to Bollywood?
