Blooming Fields in Bollywood

Outdoor settings, especially fields and villages have always managed to be a huge part of many Bollywood movies. In some, they serve to depict romance and blooming love, while in others, they could stand as a symbol for hard work and making a living.

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge is probably the first movie that comes to mind when one thinks of the use of fields in movies. Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol Devgn) finally confess their love for one another amongst the beautiful backdrop of a lush yellow mustard field. The song sequence here, "Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jaana Sanam", shows their blossoming love, while the setting adds a nice touch to the already romantic scene.

Shah Rukh Khan has starred in another movie which showed a village setting. In Veer Zaara, we saw Shah Rukh, along with Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, and Hema Malini, enjoying the "Lodhi" festival out on the fields. Here, the scenes didn't solely depict blooming love, rather the coming together of a family to enjoy the festival. There was singing, dancing, lots of food, and much emotional family time, which makes the village sequence from this movie very endearing and heart-warming. Another song pictured in the fields is "Aisa Des Hai Mera", which verbally takes you through the fields of India, giving you a little idea of the beauty it withholds.

Dil Bole Hadippa is yet another movie, which was partly shot at a village. Veera, played by Rani Mukherjee, belongs to a small village and she wishes to play for the national cricket team, a dream that is near impossible to achieve for a woman. Although Rohan (Shahid Kapoor) hails from England, he is shown dancing to bhangra, while one can see men with the traditional dhol in the background, in the midst of an extensive village fair. The beauty of this entire song is in its setting, which brings out a sense of motivation in an individual. Even though these people live in a village, they use every given chance to come together and celebrate!

On the contrary to celebration is hard work to earn and make a living. Late actress Nargis, who played Radha in Mother India, depicted the role of a 'mother' to a village. Throughout the movie, Radha works extremely hard, day and night, in the fields along with her three kids. She spends most of her time out on the fields to take care of the crops, so she can feed her children and continue to live in the same village. The movie defines the journey of a lone woman, who is out on the fields, working like a man usually does, but the fruit it bears is what keeps her going. Villages and fields used for agriculture tend to be particularly special to their owners as they represent a lot more than an asset.

These were just a handful of the many films where blooming fields have been used.

Grassy fields are usually seen as romantic places where lovers meet, confess, spend quality time together, and dance to Bollywood tunes. However, there could be a much deeper meaning attached to this scenic location when it comes to the coming together of family and celebrating a few festivals, or trying hard with each passing moment to earn a living for your family. Bollywood has managed to have us see the many uses of fields through different movies along the years!
