This week in Fragrance Of Yesteryear, BollyCurry brings to the limelight a multifaceted personality - an actor, a comedian, a script and dialogue writer, and a director. He is none other than Kader Khan.

Khan was born on October 22, 1935 in Kabul, Afghanistan, and was at the tender age of one years old when his family moved to Mumbai. He graduated from Ismail Yusuf College and became a professor of Civil Engineering at an engineering college in Mumbai. It was in this unlikely profession that Khan found his calling to Bollywood. On an annual day function of the college, he took part in a play where news of its success reached superstar, Dilip Kumar. Kumar expressed wishes of watching the play and was so impressed by Khan's acting that he signed him up for not one, but two films: Sagina Mahato (1970) and Bairaag (1976).

Khan is a versatile actor who has portrayed many roles throughout his career: from the lead antagonist, to a comedian, or the supporting role of father, uncle or brother, or merely in a guest role. He has acted in more than 450 films, both in Hindi and Urdu, and has written dialogues for many films like Roti (1974), Laawaris (1981), Desh Premee (1982), Coolie (1983), to cite a few.

Khan is also regarded as one of the people responsible for Amithabh Bachchan's catapult to success in Hindi cinema. In a time when dialogues where highly remembered and permanently associated with actors, Khan penned down memorable speeches for Big B in films such as Mr. Natwarlal, Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Muqaddar Ka Sikander (1978), Agneepath (1990), amongst many others, majority of which were big hits in Indian cinema and still remembered today.

This great actor, who is also known as a legend, also tried his luck on the small screen with the comedy show Hasna Mat on Star Plus and then on Sahara One with Hi Padosi..Kaun Hain Doshi.

Khan currently lives in Mumbai and has two sons. His son Sarfaraz Khan has also acted in a few films but hasn't been able to break into the Hindi cinema as his father.

He is fluent in Urdu, Hindi, English, and can also speak his native Pashto language.
He has won the Filmfare Best Dialogue Award for Meri Aawaaz Suno (1981) and Angaar (1992).
Latest gossip stated that he was going to write the dialogues of the sequel for Andaaz Apna Apna, but he denied that in an interview, proving the gossip to be a rumor.
Earlier this year, a false news about his death spread all over India on the Internet. However, this wasn't true and left his family very upset.

For sure, Kader Khan is a veteran actor who contributed largely to the Hindi cinema with unforgettable dialogues and timely comedy skills. Here's hoping to see him on our screens soon and wishing him luck on his future ventures.
