Bollywood seems to have been taken over by a wave of marriages in the past year. It started with Anushka Sharma marrying ace cricketer Virat Kohli in an exclusive ceremony in December 2017, after which, a number of celebrity couples followed suit! From Sonam Kapoor Ahuja marrying businessman Anand Ahuja, and Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone finally coming out in the open about their not-so-secret relationship and getting married, to Priyanka Chopra Jonas' whirlwind romance and marriage to global popstar Nick Jonas, this trend might just be here to stay. While you revel in paparazzi releasing exclusive pictures from the many ceremonies and parties, we at BollyCurry, decided to take a glance at celebrity couples who've stayed together through the ages!
It's no secret that Saira Banu had a massive crush on Dilip Kumar the day she set her eyes on him at the tender age of 12. Daughter of yesteryear actress Naseem Banu, it was a given that the younger Banu too would foray into the film industry. Initially starstruck by Dilip, over 20 years her senior, she soon warmed up to him and the two even shared screen space together. After a failed romance with Rajendra Kumar, Saira and Dilip were brought together by her mother, and the rest, as they say, is history. The two have been happily married for 53 years to date, and their lasting love is an inspiration to many!
Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan
When the Bachchans got married in 1973, they set a lot of tongues wagging. For one, Jaya was the more successful actor and Amitabh was still struggling to find his foothold in the industry with less than 5 successful films to his credit. However, it was as if marrying Jaya brought lady luck into his life and he became one of the most successful actors the Indian film industry's ever produced. The duo did have to overcome many hurdles in their marriage, from Amitabh's alleged philandering ways, to his accident during the shooting of Coolie (1983), but the couple emerged strong and have been each other's rock ever since.
Ajay and Kajol Devgn
It is rightly said that opposites attract, and Ajay and Kajol are the perfect examples! While Kajol is exuberant and talkative, Ajay is a quiet recluse who keeps to himself and seems to despise social gatherings of any sort. The couple met for the first time during the shooting of their film Hulchul (1995), and initially did not get along. However, as they went on to sign more films together, they spent time with one another and realized that despite seeing other people at the time, they were meant to be together. Ajay and Kajol got married in a traditional Maharashtrian ceremony in 1999, and have been blessed with two beautiful children, Nysa and Yug.
Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna
Akshay was truly a ladies' man, and his playboy image was no secret from anyone. He met Twinkle during a Filmfare shoot. Soon thereafter, they starred together in International Khiladi (1999), where the two of them got to know one another. The two started off dating casually but ended up falling in love. After Twinkle's Mela (2001) tanked at the Box Office, she finally agreed to Akshay's proposal and the two got married. Twinkle has since left the industry and is a renowned writer and interior designer, while Akshay has continued to entertain audiences with his movies. The duo doesn't make public appearances very often, but when they do, it is always a treat to watch them interact with one another!
Riteish and Genelia Deshmukh
Riteish and Genelia met on the sets of their debut film Tujhe Meri Kasam (2001), where they soon became best friends. As time passed, this friendship blossomed into love but the two never made their relationship public, despite heavy media speculation. Coming from different backgrounds and faiths, it took them a while to convince their families to agree to their union, but everyone saw their immense love for one another and agreed to their nuptials. The two got married in 2012 in a traditional Catholic ceremony, to honor Genelia's faith, and a star-studded Maharashtrian wedding followed by a gala reception which was attended by numerous celebrities and political figures. Despite being together for nearly 2 decades, the two appear to be just as madly in love with one another as they were back in the day. This navra-baiko jodi, as they fondly address each other, are fine examples of how marrying your best friend can be the best decision of your life!
Aside from the aforementioned couples, there are many other such celebrity couples who have stood firm, such as Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, Pankaj Kapoor and Supriya Pathak, and Salim Khan and Helen. These couples are truly inspirational as they've stood the test of time and emerged strong and victorious in this journey called marriage, all the while being under the scrutiny of the public eye.
The marriage fever in Bollywood seems to be going nowhere, as the gorgeous singer Neeti Mohan just tied the knot with model-actor Nihar Pandya a couple of weeks back, and there are rumors about Varun Dhawan finally tying the knot with his lady love Natasha Dalal. We, at BollyCurry, wish all these couples, and everyone in love, all the happiness in the world!
