Kajol Devgan nee Mukherjee (more commonly known to her fans as simply 'Kajol') born on August 7, 1974 to Tanuja and Shomu Mukherjee in Mumbai, is one of the top actresses of Tinsel Town.
The actress started her career at the mere age of 17 after dropping out of school, St. Joseph's Convent in Panchgani. Though her first film, Bekhudi (1992) was a flop, the charming and talented actress starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Baazigar (1993) next and the film shot her to fame almost overnight.
Baazigar was followed by a series of other films opposite the King Khan. Among them were Karan Arjun (1995) and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), both of which were instant box office hits. DDLJ is also one of the biggest grossing and longest running films of Indian cinema, playing for 600 weeks in cinema, a world record.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in 2001, both directed by Karan Johar and starring SRK once again, also left a large impact on audiences everywhere.
2008 brought the blockbuster film Fanaa, in which she starred opposite Aamir Khan. It is interesting to note that Kajol has only starred in one other film with Aamir, and that too not as his love interest - Ishq (1997).
Most recently, Kajol starred in My Name Is Khan (2010) with Shah Rukh and We Are Family (2010) with Arjun Rampal and Kareena Kapoor. Both films were huge hits at the box office and Kajol received the Best Actress award at the 58th Annual Filmfare Awards for her role in MNIK.
Besides the 35 films credited to her, Kajol has appeared on the small screen a number of times as well. She has been interviewed on Koffee With Karan twice, been a guest on the set of Indian Idol in 2004 and appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati with her husband Ajay Devgn in 2005. They won 1 crore [10 million] rupees on KBC, which were donated to a cancer hospital in Chennai.
Kajol and Ajay have been married for 12 years now, having gotten married on February 24, 1999. They have two children together, daughter Nysa, born in 2003, and son Yug, born in 2010. Kajol and Ajay have also starred in many films opposite one another, among them Ishq (1997), Pyar Toh Hona Hi Tha (1998), Dil Kya Kare (1999), Raju Chacha (2000) and U, Me Aur Hum (2008).
The actress has won many awards over the years. Her first award was at the 1996 Filmfare Awards for DDLJ for Best Actress. She went on to win four more Filmfare Awards, two Screen Weekly Awards, a Valenciennes International Festival of Action and Adventure Films Award and a Zee Cine Award.
