Vivek Oberoi is back on screen to make you laugh with Grand Masti and scare you off with Krissh 3. He is in the happiest phase of his life where he has back to back releases plus is in a hurry to leave for his house as his son would wake up and Daddy Oberoi wants to give him a bath. In an exclusive interview with Vivek Oberoi.
You're going through such a great phase in life, Grand Masti releases this month followed by Krissh 3. Ecstatic?
I could not have asked for more. With phenomenal success of India's Best Dramebaaz, then our prince coming into our lives and now Grand Masti. That promo that erupted on social media some 40-50 days ago. Its interesting. In the world of twitter, you get live feedback all the time. That is nice. The Krissh promo that has been breaking record after record. Having said that, I think the kind of person I am, the kind of perspective I have in my life, I feel there is so much to be thankful for in life anyway.
When Masti happened, you were not married. What fireworks happened at home when your wife got to know about this dangerous joyride called Grand Masti?
It was quite funny
actually. I was listening to the narration at my house, 1 heart attack after
the other I was listening to. I mean if Masti pushed the envelope, this film
has torn the envelope. They were narrating the script, my wife being a good,
polite host came with coffee and everything. In that process she overheard one
or two scenes. I just saw her expression, her eyes popped out, she was in shock
thinking my husband will do all this. (Laughs). I called Riteish and told him
that this film is mad and outrageous. I call him dadu because in this genre, he
is the ultimate. He is the 'Baap'. He started with us in Masti, then Kya Kool
Hain Hum, Apna Sapna Money Money, Kya Super Kool Hain Hum and now Grand Masti
has taken it another level only. When I called him and discussed as to what to
do, he made a very valid point. If people are enjoying Hangover in dubbed and
regional versions also. So why not we do something new and take it to another
level. The advantage you have with Indu ji, the director is that he is a
master. He has been there for so many years. He has this amazing ability to
work this fine between vulgarity and fun. Sometimes you start feeling that this
is vulgar. But the way he shoots it, he would actually come and perform it.
There were times when me, Riteish and Aftab would be like, we cant do it, we're
feeling awkward about it or its looking very weird. So he would come and
perform it and show it to us that this is what I need. So the confidence that
we had in him because we have worked with him in the past was tremendous. By
the way, nobody from my family has watched the film till now, (Wink) and nobody
will be watching it. I would be taking everybody to a family vacation far far
away.
Was Ajay Devgn missed on the set this time?
We missed him. I personally have done 5 films with Ajay. But this script had no space for Archana ji (Puran Singh) and Ajay. I mean these 2 people we really wanted in the film. But if you bring actors of such a stature then you should have a character that justifies their need.
Do you think for a
film like this, the correct casting is very important? Maybe if a new comer
enters with such a film, the film would be considered a sleaze fest?
Possible. But you know, all of us saw American Pie with no star cast in it and liked it. Same thing with Hangover. It could be that also that people feel that it could be a moment of the youth and it might work. But I think established team like us somewhere pushes the film a little, according to me.
It is a difficult genre because unfortunately we Indians need to grow up a little bit. We send each other all kinds of messages but wont talk about it infront of someone who we think might judge us.
