Assamese film to open Indian Panorama section at IIFI

G0uwahati, Oct 25 (IANS) Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua's "Baandhon" will open the Indian panorama section at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2012, starting Nov 20 in Goa.

The feature film is also expected to turn the wheels of fortune of the Assamese film industry, which was going through a difficult phase due to fund crunch and other factors.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Thursday formally released the film "Baandhon" (Waves of Silence) at the Anuradha cinema in the city and said that the film would not only be able to attract the cinegoers but will also earn rave reviews from the critics.

"The State Government has to step in to revive the industry going through a difficult phase as it is the responsibility of the government to do so. The cinegoers must also help the cause of the Assamese film industry in a big way by keeping the cash registers tinkling," said Tarun Gogoi.

Produced by the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation Limited (ASFFDCL), "Bandhon" was selected by the IFFI jury from a list of 300 odd entries.

The film has also raised great expectation among all sections in Assam as the award winning director Barua has come up with an Assamese project after a gap of eight years. "Tora", which was released in 2003, was his last film in the language.

"The film will get the kind of support from the moviegoers that the Assamese film industry is looking forward to," said Barua and hoped that it will give the much needed boost to the Assamese film industry.

The ASFFDCL also embarked on the project for production of the films after a gap of nearly 11 years with its first film being "Nishidha Nadi" produced in 2000.

The category at the IFFI has entries from 10 languages including Assamese, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Byari, English, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Punjabi and Tamil.

There are also two bilingual films in the category.

Konkani movie "Digant", directed by Dnyanesh Moghe, has been selected by the IFFI jury in feature film section of Indian Panorama.

The jury has chosen "Celluloid Man" (Hindi, English, Bengali and Kannada), directed by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, to open the non-feature film category of the Indian Panorama section.
