An alternative to
the mainstream cinema, Parallel Cinema is a film movement that began in
India in the 1950s, just before the rise of Indian New Wave cinema, and was
heavily influenced by Italian Neorealistic Cinema. While many mainstream actors
like the late Smita Patil,
Manoj Bajpayee,
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and
Huma Qureshi
have left their mark in this industry, this is an avenue that hasn't been
explored by too many of our popular actors. Let us take a look at some of the
current popular stars who should make a foray into parallel cinema.
The baadshah of
Bollywood,
Shah Rukh Khan, can rightly be called the epitome of success in
Bollywood. While he has explored a myriad of genres in mainstream cinema,
including the likes of romance, action, and comedy, he hasn't forayed into
parallel cinema as of yet. Given how he's exhausted practically all the genres
in Bollywood, one does wish for the star to make an appearance in parallel
cinema, and add yet another feather to his ever growing cap!
The vivacious
Parineeti Chopra entered the industry with a bang, and won over 18 awards for
her impeccable acting. Sadly though, her past couple of movies haven't
performed too well at the box office, and the same critics who lauded her
acting, are now advising her to explore newer avenues. Given Chopra Jr's acting
prowess and her enthusiasm in exploring unaccustomed paths, we at BollyCurry think
that she should dabble in parallel cinema, and make a completely new place for
herself in the industry!
Ranveer Singh is one
of the most talented and effervescent actors in the industry, but has been
disappointing the critics with his recent outings. Given his exuberant nature,
it would be extremely interesting to see him trying his hand at parallel cinema,
especially since this would be completely out of his comfort zone and unlike anything we've seen him do before.
Given her porcelain beauty,
Katrina Kaif is
lovingly touted as the barbie doll of Bollywood. Kaif has
risen to the pinnacle of success solely on the basis of her hard work
and has carved a niche for herself in the industry. One of the coveted
actresses in the industry, however, she has never been appreciated for her acting
skills. This could be attributed to the movies she chooses, which don't allow
her to explore her talent. One can't help but wonder, that if she does try her
hand at parallel cinema, maybe she'd garner a bit more appreciation?
Regardless, she should give it a shot and explore this avenue!
One of the most
popular and loved actors of Bollywood,
Salman Khan has made a name for himself
by starring in over the top comedies and action flicks, which for some bizarre
reason, earn over 200 crores at the box office every single time. Given how
he's one of the most bankable stars in the industry, an appearance in an art
film would do extremely well for the cinema, as it'd get instant recognition
amongst the masses, coupled with a lot of income. We hope that the
bhai of
Bollywood takes this advice to heart, and decides to help the parallel industry
out in his own way!
Of course, there are
many other actors who we'd love to see foraying into parallel cinema, but for
obvious reasons, it wasn't possible to list them all! Comment below and let us
know the actor you'd like to see taking the underused path to parallel cinema!
