A
glance at Rawal's early life, very little known except that he was born
and brought up in Mumbai. However, his family roots trace to a small
village "Paliyad" in Gujarat. He married Swaroop Sampat, an actress and
winner of the Miss India contest in 1979 and the couple have two sons,
Aditya and Aniruddha.
Rawal began his film career with a supporting role in
Holi (1984), however it wasn't until
Naam (1986)
that his name and face was recognized. The film was a launch pad for
his career, which took off with great success and since then, he has
appeared in over 100 films throughout the 1980s and 90s mainly in
supporting roles, comic or villainous. Some of his hit movies include
Ram Lakhan (1989),
King Uncle (1993),
Andaz Apna Apna (1994),
Tamanna(1996),
Hero No. 1 (1997),
Judaai (1997),
Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997),
Chachi 420 (1997) and
Hum Tum Pe Marte Hain (1999).
In 2000, Rawal shot to fame with the ever hilarious
Hera Pheri (2000) for which he won the Filmfare Best Comedian award. He reprised his role of Baburao in the sequel
Phir Hera Pheri(2006), which was also very successful. He partook in several other comic roles in the 2000s such as
Aankhen (2002),
Awara Paagal Deewana (2002),
Deewane Huye Paagal (2005),
Malamaal Weekly (2006),
Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006),
Bhagam Bhag (2006),
Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007),
Welcome (2007) and
De Dana Dan (2009).
Rawal played a lead role in OMG - Oh My God! (2012)
with Akshay Kumar whilst producing the movie as well. He has an
upcoming movie on a biopic of Narendra Modi and is speculated to be
producing another movie. Rawal has also produced Indian television soaps
including Zee TV's Teen Bahuraaniyaan, Sahara One's Main Aisi Kyunn Hoon and Colors' Laagi Tujhse Lagan.
Rawal
has also accomplished himself as a politician. His recent success
includes winning this year's general election from the East Ahmedabad
constituency as a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In
his long filmy career, Rawal has won many awards including the Padma
Shri Award in 2014, the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor
for
Woh Chokri and
Sir in 1994, the Filmfare Best Villain Award for
Sir in 1993, the Filmfare Best Comedian Award for
Hera Pheri in 2001 and
Awara Paagal Deewana in 2003, the Star Screen Award Best Supporting Actor for
Raja in 1996, the Star Screen Award for Best Comedian for
Hera Pheri in 2001 and
Awara Paagal Deewana in 2003, the IIFA Best Comedian Award for
Hera Pheri in 2001 and the Zee Cine Award for Best Actor in a Comic Role for
Awara Paagal Deewana in 2003.
Besides cinema, Rawal has also acted in a few Doordarshan serials between 1984 and 1988. The first was Bante Bighadte with Reeta Bhaduri that aired from 1984 to 1988 and then Chunauti that aired from 1984 to 1985.
