Udta Punjab Music Review: Edgy, Energetic and Tremendously Exciting

One of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year, Udta Punjab, is slated to release on the 17th of June, 2016. Directed by Abhishek Chaubhey, the crime-thriller tackles the issue of drug abuse in the Indian state of Punjab. Among other things, the film boasts a truly stellar cast of Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh in lead roles. Dosanjh, a superstar in Punjabi cinema, is making his Bollywood debut with this film in the role of a cop.

The plot certainly sounds promising, and the film should be helped, undoubtedly, by the truly phenomenal music. One expects sheer quality from Amit Trivedi. He delivers and how! This album is an absolute gem. The lyrics by Shellee and Varun Grover are full of expletives, dark in places and ultimately utterly exciting. Late Shri Shiv Kumar Batalvi's poem Ikk Kudi is given voice by Shahid Mallya and Diljit Dosanjh in two versions of the song.

The album opens with the breathtakingly wild "Chitta Ve". Sung by Babu Haabi, Shahid Mallya and Bhanu Pratap, the song is high on both profanity and pulsating energy. It starts with Babu Haabi's rap, and then changes track as it picks up the music after over a minute. There are references in Shellee's edgy and often obscene lyrics to "chitta", which is about the issue the film is going to tackle. They are accompanied by thumping electronic beats. All in all, this is a slightly weird and completely wild start to the album.

"Da Da Dasse" is voiced amazingly by Kanika Kapoor and there is a very quirky hip-hop vibe to the song but it is also a very melodious number. Babu Haabi once again does the rap part of the song.

"Ikk Kudi" is simply gorgeous. There is no other word for it. Shahid Mallya brings a lot of soul into his rendition of the beautiful poem written by Late Shri Shiv Kumar Batalvi. Trivedi's composition is faultless here. Wonderfully intricate, this one is bound to stay with the listener long after it is over.

"Ud-daa Punjab" is almost suddenly explosive after the melodious "Ikk Kudi", but in a good way. In a very, very good way, because this one is possibly the most uninhibited song of the album. The gritty in-your-face lyrics by Varun Grover are matched by the passionate vocals, the limitless energy, Dadlani's rap and the terribly engrossing beats. It is hard not to get absolutely addicted to this song.

Shahid Mallya is altogether outstanding in "Hass Nach Le". The lyrics once again have been penned down by Shellee and they are accompanied by the wonderful melody of the harmonium and the tabla. "Hass Nach Le" is a very soulful composition and sounds very much like hope; and Mallya is flawless in his rendition.

Amit Trivedi does a solo in "Vadiya", and this is the only song that seems a bit of a let-down. It sounds a little similar to "Chitta Ve". It has similar beats, but it is less energetic, and the vocals are less explosive.

The album ends with the reprised version of "Ikk Kudi", voiced by Diljit Dosanjh. It is the one of the, if not the best song of this album. Dosanjh's voice is almost other-worldly beautiful in this one; it is warm and delicate. This is a mellow song, but the album certainly ends on a high with this supreme rendition of "Ikk Kudi".

BollyCurry gives this album a five out of five. We urge you to go to YouTube or to your favorite music streaming website and listen to all the wonderful songs. We promise that you won't be disappointed.
