After the success of Highway and Gunday, Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor return to steal our hearts with their upcoming film 2 States, an adaption of a book of the same name written by popular Indian author Chetan Bhagat. Directed by newcomer Abhishek Varman, the film is based on the love story of a Punjabi boy (Krrish Malhotra) and a Tamilian girl (Ananya Swaminathan), and how the duo convince their families to accept their relationship.

The magical trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy reunited to compose the music of this much talked about flick, while the ace singer-lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya has penned down the lyrics for the songs. The specialty of the songs in this film lies in the fact that all of them are placed at extremely poignant moments in the course of the film, and the context truly brings the lyrics to life.

The album opens with the peppy love song "Offo", sung by the multi-talented, Amitabh Bhattacharya and the effervescent, Aditi Singh Sharma whose recent songs have taken everyone by a storm. The catchy lyrics and energetic beats make it a likable number, and one can't help but sway along with the lively song.

Next in the album is "Locha-E-Ulfat", a vibrant song that revolves around Krrish's confusion regarding his feelings for Ananya. Benny Dayal is back after the popular track "Badtameez Dil", and how! The song is extremely catchy, and the bridge in the latter half gives it a completely different feel. Definitely one of the best tracks of the album, this song and its signature step have already become quite a rage amongst the youth! You don't want to miss out on this super-hit peppy track!

"Mast Magan" is quite a soulful song and on listening to it the first time, the lyrics and music may fool you into thinking that it's a sad song. Contrary to that, the song comes at a moment where the protagonists are separated by distance, Krrish in Delhi and Ananya in Chennai. The lyrics only serve to heighten and emphasize the longing the two feel for one another. The song starts off with the dholkis and a rather Punjabi beat, but soon transitions into a more Tamilian tune, when Krrish goes to Chennai, and the traditional nadheswaram is used to bring in the regional effect, a fusion which hasn't been heard before in Bollywood. Arijit Singh and Chinmayi Sripada's soulful voices make this romantic track even more melodious, and one can listen to the heartwarming song for hours on end!

Next up in the album is "Iski Uski", a foot tapping Punjabi wedding number, that marks the return of the immensely talented Shahid Mallya after his last outing in the title track of Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana (2012). He teams up with the skillful Akriti Kakar to belt out this frisky song. The energetic beats and the bhangra styled Punjabi lyrics ultimately make this one of the best Punjabi wedding numbers in recent times. It is surely got the potential to be played at numerous weddings for a long period to come. If you haven't heard it yet, you're surely missing out!

For a supposedly sad song, "Chandaniya" surprisingly boasts of a rather fast tempo. However, the emotional lyrics and fantastic vocals by the lesser known K Mohan, the lead singer of the rock band Agnee, and the finalist of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009, Yashita Sharma, make this song a very beautiful number overall. It may take some time to grow on you, but it doesn't fail to impress.

The last one in the album is a festive track "Hulla Re", a rather interesting amalgamation of Punjabi lyrics sung by the father-son duo Shankar Mahadevan and Siddharth Mahadevan, along with a Tamil rap by reality show participant Rasika Shekhar, who is relatively new to the Bollywood circuit. While the song is supposed to be a wedding number, the rock beats give it a rather dark vibe, and it doesn't exactly come across as a song one can dance to in a wedding.

The songs of 2 States have successfully managed to combine the music of the two diametrically opposite states and cultures present in the film. However, the fact that only two songs in the film have a semblance to the Tamil culture ("Mast Magan" and "Hulla Re"), the average listener is left wanting for more Tamil fusion in the tracks, given the theme of the film. Nevertheless, the myriad genres of music explored in this album will surely catapult it to the top of the charts in no time!
