Trailer Review - OK Jaanu

Karan Johar's fascination with cinema down South became evident with his association with the magnum opus, Baahubali: The Beginning (2015). Turns out, however, that it wasn't the end of his intrigue, especially when he discovered a recent Mani Ratnam flick that had the nation in a frenzy. Earlier today, Dharma Productions and Madras Talkies released the trailer of their joint venture, OK Jaanustarring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur in the lead roles. The movie is the official remake of Ratnam's modern romantic classic, O Kadhal Kanmani (2015) featuring Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen. Directed by Shaad Ali, the remake retains Leela Samson, reprising her role, while Naseeruddin Shah takes over Prakash Raj's character.

The movie attempts to showcase a contemporary love story based in Mumbai. Aditya (Kapur) and Tara (Kapoor) are two ambitious youths who have their career goals set. Love blossoms and the couple decide to get into a live-in relationship, which does not go down too well with their landlord (Shah). The trailer is infused with some fun-filled, intimate, and some not so happy moments in the leads' lives. Trouble crawls into their ever-so-perfect paradise as they're torn between their dreams and love. Whether they have a happily-ever-after or not, forms the crux of the film.

Kapoor and Kapur (Yes, we know that sounds a little odd.) rekindle their crackling chemistry from Aashiqui 2 (2013). Kapur displays the required boyish charm, especially when he flashes that charming smile, while Kapoor is effervescent as ever. Shah has little screen-time in the trailer but leaves a lasting impact. However, Samson was nowhere to be seen in the two-minute long trailer.

The craftsman that Ratnam is, his portrayal of an urban tale of love is equivalent to brilliance. Ali, who has previously recreated Ratnam's vision in Saathiya (2002), replicates some unforgettable moments from the original, with a twist of his own. Ravi K. Chandran's cinematography is one to watch out for, because he captures Mumbai like never before. However, it is the soundtrack that steals the show, all credits to maestro, A.R Rahman. Reportedly, he is going to rehash most of his chartbusters from O Kadhal Kanmani (2015) and we cannot wait to hear the album.

New genres are born, unconventional hits come and go, but love stories never fail to strike a chord with the audience. When two patriarchs of cinematic romance collaborate for a film, we're bound to expect magic. With the added responsibility of matching to its cult original, we, at BollyCurry, wish the team the best of luck, and rate the trailer a 3.5 out of 5 (the extra half for the protagonists' chemistry). And what do we think about the fate of OK Jaanu? Figure out kar lengeon 13th January, 2017!
