Silver Screen Inspired By Books

From Harry Potter to The Da Vinci Code and The Kite Runner, Hollywood has many a times looked towards books for inspiration. Its Indian Sister, Bollywood recently has also been looking towards books for inspiration starting with the recent critically acclaimed film Namesake, which has truly merged the bridge between Indian and Western Cinema.

One such popular author making a quick transition is Chetan Bhagat who has been selling rights for all his books to film makers to transcribe his stories with their magic wands on to the big screen. Bhaghat's first novel and his claim to fame was Five Point Someone; situated around the life at IIT, the novel has been a bestseller which has recieved appreciation by readers globally. 3 Idiots being directed by the ace film maker Raj Kumar Hirani (Munnabhai fame) is based on Bhaghat's first novel and the film will see Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Madhavan and Boman Irani in lead roles. The film's first look is already out and with such a promising star cast under the direction of the talented Raj Kumar Hirani, the film will definetely be a must watch!

Bhagat's One Night In A Call Center is already under production with Sohil Khan, Sharman Joshi, Isha Koppikar, Amrita Arora, and Gul Panag. Real life couple Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif will also be seen making a special appearance in this film being directed and produced by Atul Agnihotri! A story on the harsh realities of call centers in India, the day to day troubles that individuals face in this working atmosphere mixed with the complexities of one's love life, One Night in A Call Center will transcend into an exciting film with a gripping plot which will keep audiences at the edge of their seats!

Bhaghat's latest novel Three Mistakes Of My Life made it to bookstores May 2008 and the discussions about selling the rights to a film maker are already making rounds. We wonder what will happen to script writers and story conceptualizers if Bollywood keeps on looking towards the world of literature for ideas. But as they say, nothing can match the magic of a book and the challenge for Bollywood film makers is to match the ace writing and imagination of the author and bring it live on to the big screen! Will they be successful? Can inspired films ever match their original counterpart books? Share your opinions with us....
