Happy Birthday Rakhee!

Today when India celebrates it's Independence day, this versatile actress of the Indian film industry celebrates her birthday. Yes, we are talking about the beautiful and suave, Rakhee Gulzar!

Rakhee was born on 15th August, 1947 to a Bengali family in Ranaghat, West Bengal. She appeared primarily in Hindi films, as well as various Bengali films. She went on to marry film director, Ajay Biswas, but unfortunately it ended shortly after. At a later stage, she married film director and lyricist, Gulzar. The couple have a daughter, Meghna Gulzar. They separated when their daughter was only a year old but are not legally divorced.

Rakhee debuted as an actor, at the age of 20, in the Bengali film, Badhu Baran (1967). She bagged the lead role in her first Hindi film, Jeevan Mrityu (1970), where she was paired opposite Dharmendra. The lady firmly established her name in the film industry as a lead heroine with Sharmilee (1971), Lal Patthar (1971) and Paras (1971). No sooner, she got the opportunity to work with many popular actors of her time, including Dev Anand and Shashi Kapoor. Rakhee is fondly remembered for her roles in the films, Blackmail (1973), Tapasya (1976), Kabhi Kabhi (1976), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1977), Trishul (1978), Bemisal (1982) and Ram Lakhan (1989).

Rakhee received many awards and honors throughout her career. She won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her last film, Shubho Mahurat (2003), after which she retired from the film Industry. She was also awarded the Padma Shri Award in the year 2003.
