Bollywood Mat Kaho na!

"Bollywood" has gradually become a globally accepted moniker to refer to the Hindi film industry... well, almost globally accepted. Though the name is synonymous with excitement and entertainment in the minds of many, there are some (read: celebrities) who are less enthusiastic about the term. Without any much ado, here's a look at who doesn't heart Bollywood and why they'd rather hear it referred to differently.

Superstar Salman Khan, who has grown all the more popular by delivering 2010's biggest hit, Dabbang, recently wrote in his twitter account:

"Hate this bloody name, Bollywood, koi naam hai kya? Disgusting (sic)." ((c) Twitter)

He didn't stop here; soon after he added another post on the same topic to expound on the reason for his "disgust":

"Hollywood se bollywood naam nikla, this is nt the name of our industry. Don't kno whr this ridiculous name has cm frm n got stuck. Bollywood was fr wen mumbai was called bombay toh kya shld it nt b called mumllywood. it makes us look like chamchas. 1 of the 1 st film production was called bombay talkie's so call it that or mumbai tal... Or indian cinema, call it any thing but nt boll..." ((c) Twitter)

After this post, the tinsel town sorority could not help but react and most of the ones that took notice of it, thought Sallu had a point. Actor Riteish Deshmukh wrote: "I totally love the term Hi-Fi for hindi film industry - instead of Bollywood (sic)."

Others who joined Team Sallu included our Oscar-hero A.R.Rahman, Amitabh Bachchan, Imtiaz Ali, Saif Ali Khan, Gul Panag, and Dia Mirza amongst others. Imtiaz Ali said, "We are not a cheap imitation of some other 'wood'." Saif Ali Khan echoed these sentiments in the following tweet: "We should start calling ourselves the Indian Film Industry."

Although there are many who think that the Indian Film Industry should have its own identity, there are others who have no objection to the status quo. "It's a word that's caught on, and is now globally recognized as the identity of Hindi Films."  says actress Minissha Lamba.

The debate seems to be a new hot topic, but it is not the first time such a question has arisen. Veteran megastar Amitabh Bachchan also feels the same way, and has even been consistently expressing his annoyance at the term. Last year, he had tweeted: "FI : Film Industry, InFI : Indian Film Industry ... a much recommended and apt name than the other plagiarized euphemism!"

So readers, why not cast your vote in what is undoubtedly the most important election ever. The future of Bollywood (or whatever you decide to rename it) is in your hands... that is, provided your favorite stars agree!
