For Bollywood celebrities, being fashionable is just as important as scoring a hit at the box office. No matter how fleeting trends may be, Bollywood fashionistas are always jumping at the chance to embrace them. Over the past year we got to see some interesting vogues making round in the fashion circuit. As we wait for 2013 coming to a close, BollyCurry looks back on some of the biggest fashion trends that ruled the past year.

Monochrome

Black and white - you won't find a more classic combination than the marriage of these opposites. While bold colors, pastels and metallic are eye catching, sometimes it's nice to keep things simple. But don't be fooled! Simple by no means translates to boring. This classic combo can be put together with different prints - from stripes to polka to color block and flora - creating a myriad of fascinating looks. Bollywood celebs flaunted this trend in a variety of styles; in form of formal apparels to laid back dressing. With such versatility, no wonder monochrome was one of the hottest trends this year.

High-low tunic

The high-low trend has been in full swing in the fashion world for the last couple of years and this year is no different. Be it tops, dresses or skirts, the high-low trend lets fashionistas stay classy and sophisticated while embracing their fun side. 2013 saw Bollywood celebs flaunting this trend in tunics. The mullet hemline has transformed these otherwise ordinary tunics into trend-right staples and the stars into instant trendsetters. I guess it's true what they say - all business in the front and party in the back!

Sheer tops

Sometimes it's okay to show some skin - that was the message of Fall fashion this year. International and local designers alike have included sheer in their collections making it the coolest (pun very much intended) trend of this Fall. Sheer is undoubtedly one of the sexiest trends out there so don't expect B-town ladies to shy away from it. They have embraced it and that too with open arms. Bollywood divas were seen flaunting their sheer tops (and sexy lingerie) while attending events or running errands around town. Although the sheer look may project confidence and attitude, it is also unforgiving. If there was ever a time you needed to hit the gym, this would be it.

Neon

Neon is bright, bold and it can transform an outfit from blah to edgy in an instant. But it is not everyone's cup of tea, except this year of course. Spring and summer fashion shined bright (very bright!) thanks to the electric neon colors. If you are not feeling bold enough for a neon dress or a saree, it's okay. Neon can be adorned in any part of one's outfit - jewellery, bags, footwear and even make-up. Bollywood stars happily flaunted this throwback 80s style of neon all year around. While some embraced the trend head on in neon colored ensembles, others kept it subtle and added a touch of neon to take their outfits to the next level.

Peplum

This is one fashion trend that refuses to go away. Peplum has been going strong for over two years now, and no, we are not complaining. Nipped at the waist and flared at the hip, peplum creates the illusion of symmetry for the hips and shoulders and showcases the feminine figure like no other. Although peplum is ideal for curvy body type, the truth is, it is universally flattering. Peplum style paired with a slim silhouette, be it a skinny jeans or a pencil skirt, can give anyone the perfect hour-glass figure. If you are thinking of giving this trend a try, know that there are many styles of peplum - shirts, dresses, skirts and belts. The best part? Peplum can be dressed down for comfy casual or dressed up for evening glam. Now that's versatility.

Box clutch

On the red carpet, handbags have little to do with utility. They are now more an extension of one's outfit and a chance to make a fashion statement. Thus, the box clutch, or the miniaudiere, was the must have accessory on the red carpet this year. It is small yet dramatic and epitomizes traveling light while looking refined and sophisticated. Whether it is the classic black or a jewel-encrusted masterpiece, nothing looks classier and completes an evening look better than a box clutch. It is no surprise then that Bollywood leading ladies chose to put their best fashionable foot forward with the help of these small statement pieces.

There you have it, a short list of the hottest fashion trends of 2013. Which trend was your favorite? Which one do you wish would just go away never to return again? Let us know in the comments section below.
