Anyone, who ever followed the good part of Bolly cinema in the recent
couple years knows who we mean when we refer to 'him' as 'Silencer'. No?! Well you're bound to at least recall what happens to a teacher's day speech when words like chamatkar are 'found and replaced all' by balatkaar!
Yes, now you know, and we are talking of that very same unforgettable speech from dear old Chatur the Silencer in the2009 mega blockbuster hit, 3 Idiots.
The
man, to be called by his own real world name, is Omi Vaidya. If you
were joining his fan club with performance number one, we give you heads
up, cause the entertainment has only just begun. Omi, who is an Indian
American artist in our home industry, won the Most Promising New comer
(Male) and Best Comedian Star Screen awards for his 2009 debut. He
consequently went on to anchor the Star TV singing competition Chotte Ustaad, and shall now be seen in the upcoming multi-starrer Dil To Bacha Hai Ji.
More on him, right from the horse's mouth. Over to you Omi...
1. Could you shine some light on your character that you essay in Dil Toh Bacha Hai Ji?
Milind
Kelkar is a maharastrian Indian who is in love with Hindi poetry and
the idea of true love. This is ironic because he works in a matrimonial
office setting up arranged marriages. When Milind meets Gungun Sarkar he
falls in love and sets on a mission to make her fall in love with him.
But things always don't according to plan....
2. What made you say yes to the role?
I loved Madhur Bhandarkar's Chandni Bar when I saw it years ago and knew
that this director was special and rare in Bollywood. So when Madhurji
approached me for a role in his new film, I jumped at the chance to do
something challenging and meaningful.
3. The prankster on the sets? Any prank that you recall?
No, not really but it was almost
everyone was joking on set especially Madhurji. Although he's known for
serious films, the tone on set is relaxed and we're always laughing from
his jokes or one-liners.
4. One role in Bollywood that
you grew up being in awe of and could have possibly been a huge
motivation for you to venture in to Hindi Cinema.
Hmmm.
This is a hard one because to be honest, I never thought I would be
working in Bollywood. I worked as an actor in Hollywood and got this
role by chance. But I remember watching a film called Tukaraam from the
1950's which I really enjoyed and has always inspired me to continue no
matter how much I struggle.
5. Your pick - Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan - as,
(a) the actor
(b) the co-star on sets
(c) the friend
a) Aamir is the actor because he has an in depth focus on acting and is constantly questioning and challenging what he is doing.
b) Ajay is a co-star, he is very professional, courteous, and helpful.
c) Abhishek is the closest thing to a friend of the three, because we are
closer of age, have similar senses of humour and have a good time on
set.
6. What sort of films are you looking for in future?
It's
not films I'm looking for. It's characters. Characters that are three
dimensional and engaging. I also want to play roles I haven't played yet
so for me, sequels are less interesting than original films.
7. Who would you like to work with? Any special names ?
Names
are less important than talent, passion and focus on work. Great
artists are ones who work harder and longer on their work. Talent is
important too but can be developed so I need to see that spark and the
scripts have to be special. If I had a wish list, it would probably have
the names Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee, Shabana Azmi, Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin Shah on it.
8. Last not but least, do you have anything to say to your fans who have loved you since 3 Idiots?
Thank
you so much for all your support and I owe a lot of my success to you. I
know that expectations are high for my next film, so I have tried very
hard to do something different but with the same amount of effort I put
into playing Chatur Ramalingam. I hope you enjoy my future films and if
you ever see me in person, please come say hi.
