From playing a GUJARATI role to wearing COLOURFUL clothes in Sanju...

Vicky Kaushal plays a character of Sanjay Dutt's close friend in Rajkumar Hirani's film, "Sanju" played by Ranbir Kapoor.

There has been a lot of confusion about Vicky Kaushal's role, as to which friend the actor is playing in Sanju. when asked him Vicky said, "So I am playing his close friend called Paresh who is a Gujarati and from the states. They (Sanjay Dutt and Paresh) have been friends since Rocky's (Dutt's debut film) time till date. They are like brothers more than friends and there are some anecdotes and incident that happened with other friends which we have used in my character. It's like an amalgamation, a fictional character. Whoever knows Sanju sir they will get to know that I am playing Paresh. It's primarily Paresh but, we had to name the character different and I did not have to follow his body language."

Vicky Kaushal will be seen speaking in Gujarati for the first time in this film, Talking about it how was it to speak the language the actor said, "It was really good and something new for me. It's for the first time that I explored this language. I am playing a Gujarati character and it's such a sweet language that it's got a tendency if you indulge in it...it might go overboard and sound like a caricature. Abhijat Joshi who is the screenplay writer and Dimple Shah a crew member who is into Gujarati theatre helped me a lot with the language and with each line to the diction of it. The film is panning over three decades. Initially, as the film starts there's too much Gujarati to speak. Eventually when he starts living in the states after 20-30 years how the language fades and how much Americanness will come, is something that we have incorporated in the character. I also went to Surat for 3-4 days to learn the body language of the people. I talked with the locals out there and secretly took some notes from that."

Till now, Vicky Kaushal has been seen in simple and intense roles where the actor had to wear subtle colours in the films. However, for Sanju, his lively character has allowed him to wear fresh, dark and happy colours. When we asked him how did he felt wearing such colours, Vicky said, "It's amazing! My look test used to happen at Rajkumar Hirani Sir's office and I used to be so happy with the costume trial. Till now how much ever roles I have done everyone had a reference, "We do not want these type of clothes" (colourful clothes) (Laughs). And this is such a role where the director said, "Subtle (colours) nai chahiye!" (We don't want subtle colours). We want happy colours for this character like Blue, green, red, yellow..." I used to love it. It felt like I am living something and have the liberty to wear such colours."

He further concluded by saying, "We have kind of taken the liberty to live the character the way it suits the storytelling. Ranbir's part is different she had to actually look and walk like him but, I did not have a pressure like him, my character was fabricated.
