It was an idea that Akshay and the makers were toying with, right through the development of the film. Padman is based on the story of Arunachalam Muruganantham who brought about a near revolution by introducing a machine capable of producing low-cost sanitary pads, the actor was of the opinion that it should reach as many women as possible. Confirming the story, Vivek Krishnani, MD, Sony Pictures, co-producers of the film, says, "It's our way of expressing gratitude for the incredible love and support the film is receiving."
