Chandigarh, June 20 (IANS) The Chandigarh police registered a case of obscenity against artist Viren Tanwar nearly eight months after a complaint was filed against him.

The crime branch of the Chandigarh police Thursday registered a case against Tanwar for displaying paintings showing nudity at an exhibition at the Alliance Francaise premises here last year.

The case was registered following a complaint by local lawyer Arvind Thakur against Tanwar.

Ironically, the same paintings were displayed in exhibitions in New Delhi and other places but no complaints were filed then.

Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police S. Srivastava said a case has been registered and the matter was being investigated.

About the delay in registering the case and similar cases not being filed against Tanwar in other cities, Srivastava said the Chandigarh police had to act as it got a complaint here.

'We had sent the matter for legal opinion and registered a case only after that. This led to the delay,' Srivastava told IANS.
