Chennai, Oct 30 (IASN) 'Malaikottai' is just an average commercial film, but with no good releases till Diwali it has toppled the serious 'Katrathu Thamizh' from number one position.

The top five Tamil films are:

1. 'Malaikottai' - Director: Bhoopathy Pandian. The success of the film shows mindless action and tasteless comedy can work at the box office. Actor Vishal climbs the ladder with its success.

2. 'Katrathu Thamizh' - Director: Ram. It's a relief that a film like 'Katrathu Thamizh' manages to make its mark at the ticket window. Ram's debut as the director is excellent.

3. 'Marudumalai'- Director: Suraj. Several weeks after its release, Arjun's masala film is doing good business.

4. 'Sathum Podathey' - Director: Vasanth. There are flaws in Vasanth's 'Sathum Podathey', but the way he has handled human emotions is laudable. Nitin Satya is also receiving praise for his performance as the maniacal impotent husband.

5. 'Thavam' - Director: Sakthi Parameswar. There is nothing to write home about the film, but in the absence of new releases in last two weeks, it is doing well. 'Thavam' is produced by action king Arjun for Arun Vijay.
