New Delhi, Jan 26 (IANS) The haunting strains of 'Sun Mere Bandhu Re' filled the air as the Tripura tableau rolled down Rajpath at the Republic Day parade here, paying tribute to legendary film musician S.D. Burman Tuesday.

The float showed a boat, with a larger than life model of the late Burman, who had sung in many Bollywood movies. The back of the vessel had singing boatmen and a collage of posters of his films.

Burman, who hailed from Tripura, created music for 89 Hindi and 31 Bengali movies.

He was famous for 'boat songs', called 'bhatiyali' in Bengali. People still hum these songs in Hindi and Bengali.

It is said that most of Burman's popular tunes came to him in a flash and he never sat down with a harmonium to compose the songs that left a rich legacy for the younger generations.
