Drishyam - Movie Review

How far will you go to save the dignity of your family? Especially when that family is the only world that matters to you? Nishikant Kamat's Drishyam tells us a tale of the same thing. An adaptation of the 2013 super hit Malayalam film of the same name, is indeed frame by frame adapted. This is the plight of most of the remakes in Bollywood. But since the story is the hero of this movie, one wouldn't complaint.

Drishyam is a story about a simple middle-class man, Vijay (Ajay Devgn) whose world revolves around his wife and two daughters. How Vijay goes through leaps and bounds to save the dignity of his family.

Ajay Devgn essays the role of Vijay Salgaonkar who has a small time cable business in a small village in Goa. He kind off plays the role of a common man quite convincingly. It was quite refreshing to see Ajay play a character that isn't a cop or a guy who beats the hell out of the bad guys. He does a good job overall.

Shreya Saran plays Ajay's wife in the film. Sorry to say but she can't act, probably because her dialogue delivery just wasn't right. She plays a woman who is not very educated, but speaks with a definitive English accent. Strange, isn't it?

Tabu plays the role of I.G. Meera Deshmukh, is fierce. She plays her role with a lot of vigilance. She is pure dynamic onscreen. The toughness of a cop and helplessness of a mother are both portrayed brilliantly by her.

Other characters of the movie like Ishita Dutta and Mrinal who play Ajay's daughters in the film. They do their bit quite well especially Mrinal who is quite cute. Rajat Kapoor too is very impressive in the film.

The movie is very well paced and keeps the audience gripped to the screen. The suspense plays a rather important role in this. Songs only provide the backdrop for the ongoing plot and nothing else. The drama in the 1st 20-30 minutes of the movie is quite boring, but when the suspense starts building one gets surely intrigued. Obviously if you have watched the Malayalam version, this wouldn't quite interest you. But in case you haven't you should definitely go for an awesome story. The movie is a good attempt but somewhere lacks a spark.
