The credits that roll right at the beginning of a film, or at the end. The ones that we often skip by buying popcorn and drinks or fast forwarding though them. It is there that the names which can make or break a film appear. Thus, during the occasion of National Payroll Week, BollyCurry brings to you the production houses that have garnered substantial income so far.

Yash Raj Films

In business since late 1970, Yash Raj Films (YRF) has produced more than 300 blockbuster movies and takes credit for launching some of the biggest names existing in B-Town. Unfortunately, its owner, the renowned and respected Yash Chopra, passed away last year, before the release of his love saga, Jab Tak Hai Jaan. It was luck that he terminated his project with his brother, which resulted in the building of the Yash Raj Empire. The name was inspired by Yash Chopra and Rajesh Khanna, hence YRF. The house first produced Daag: A Poem of Love in 1973 and there has been no looking back since. Amitabh Bachchan was the prominent face of Yash Raj and delivered hits such as Silsila, Deewar and Trishul, but was then replaced by Shah Rukh Khan who wooed audiences in hit films like DarrDilwale Dulhaniya Le JayengeVeer Zaara and Rab Ne Bana Do Jodi. YRF dominates the major Indian film industry and has been on the list of top five production houses for the past two decades now.

Viacom 18 Motions Pictures

Producing commercial as well as art house cinema, Viacom 18 Motions Pictures is a rising and quickly leading production house. Movies which made it a prominent business are Singh is Kingg, Golmaal Returns, Ghajini and Gangs of Wasseypur part 1 and 2.  It also produced the recently released commercially successful Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, starring Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor. The movie gave the much needed fame and achievement to the house en route its eventual record breaking feat. The house was launched in November 2007 has been a flourishing enterprise since.

Aamir Khan Productions

Endeared as "The Perfectionist" Aamir Khan started his production house Aamir Khan Productions (AKP) in 2001, with the Oscar nominated movie, Lagaan, becoming the first film to be produced under the banner. Soon after, the house came up with a masterpiece, the youth awakening Rang De Basanti. The film revolved around love, friendship and revenge whilst giving an insight of Indian history. Khan soon donned the director's cap for his much appreciated film Taare Zameen Par, showcasing the life of a dyslexic boy. Along with parallel cinema, AKP produced commercial films such as Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na, Peepli Live, Dhobi Ghaat, DelhiBelly and Talaash. The same house also produced the mega hit show on Star Plus, Satyamev Jayate, delving in real issues rampant in India and winning hearts all round.

Red Chillies Entertainment

Red Chillies Entertainment (RCE), originally Dreamz Unlimited, is owned by the power couple of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan and wife, Gauri Khan. Super hit film, Main Hoon Na, was the product of this house directed by ace choreographer, Farah Khan. The film revolved around an army man on a secretive mission and his union with his step mother and brother. Paheli, India's Oscar entry, had a dismal performance at the Box-Office but was praised by critics, nonetheless. Om Shanti Om, Deepika Padukone's debut vehicle, was a massive hit! The house also produced the expensive sci-fi film Ra.One. Other hits delivered by RCE are My Name Is Khan, Student of the Year, Don 2 and the recent super hit, Chennai Express.

Dharma Productions

The motto of this super successful production house is "Lots of stories to be told...lots of hidden talent to be discovered...and lots of movies to be made", and till date, it lives up to it. Founded by the late Yash Johar in 1976, his son Karan Johar succeeded him and now heads the house. Films such as Muqaddar Ka Faisla, Agneepath, Gumrah, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie GhamKal Ho Na Ho, Dostana, Wake Up Sid are a product of this house. The recent blockbuster, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, was the house's highest grosser collecting 301 crore! My Name Is Khan was another hit, offering of the duo, Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, another feather in their caps. Dharma Productions is also one of those houses that have topped the list of famous production houses for over two decades.

Other famous production houses that have made a mark are: UTV Motions Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, T-Series, Vishesh Films, Balaji Motion Pictures and Eros International. While we appreciate the actors for their hard work, it's the men behind the camera, the production crew, that also need to be thanked. Here's our tribute to them and a bow of salute as well.
