Kolkata, May 15 (IANS) Emphasising the need for awareness about the rights of a girl child, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Shantha Sinha Tuesday said it was important for the society as a whole to stand for the rights of a girl child.

"Girls in India continue to be victims of many social evils and it's time the society stood firm and lent support to the girls in their fight for their rights. It's time the society gave them the respect and the place which they deserve," Sinha said.

Sinha inaugurated a two-day documentary film festival focusing on the rights of the girl child.

"Films are a strong medium of conveying message and spreading awareness. I hope this festival is a huge success," Sinha added.

Titled Meyebela: Amader Chaoa-Paoa (Girlhood: Our desires-our gain), the fest is a joint venture of Child Rights and You (CRY) and Parichiti - a women's organisation. It will showcase over a dozen movies, including the "Post Master" directed by legendary moviemaker Satyajit Ray with a screenplay inspired by a short story written by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Another notable entry is "The Magic Tree" directed by Polish filmmaker Andrzej Maleszka.

The movie, based on an International Emmy Award-winning Polish television series, follows the story of a magical oak tree whose special properties are unknown to the world until it is cut down and turned into a variety of items.

"Most people are attracted to films and we thought the festival would be an interesting way to reach out to sections of the public. This is an opportunity to focus on different aspects of girlhood, both of childhood and adolescence," said Achinta Ghatak, secretary of Parichiti.
