Film festival on literary adaptations in capital

New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS) Aficionados of literature and cinema can rejoice as a film festival celebrating the big screen adaptations of bestsellers like 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' will commence in the capital Sep 17.

Organised by American Center in collaboration with Cine Darbaar and Penguin, the gala is called Road to Classicity Film Festival. To open with 'The Big Sleep' (1946) -- based on Raymond Chandler's hardboiled crime novel, the fest will have a total of eight movies that will run on till Sep 19.

'Literature and cinema are the two most popular art forms of 20th century and it is relevant to study the relationships between them. Cinema for long has been dependent on literature for storytelling and narrative but through this festival we are trying to establish cinema as an independent art form,' a statement from Cine Darbaar said.

Other adaptations to be screened at the three-day gala are 'Paths of Glory' (1957), 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' (1961), 'The Age of Innocence' (1993), 'There Will be Blood' (2007) and 'The Road' (2009).

Penguin books will also be having an exhibition during the event for the audience. The gala also boasts of competitions like review writing on books and films, and quiz rounds after the screenings for the audience.

Cine Darbaar is associated in film curating-programming and taking workshops at various film institutes for building a culture for cinephiles.
