The film is inspired by a real-life heist on March 19, 1987 where a group posing as CBI officers executed an income tax raid.

The film opens on the date March 18, 1987 where a walk-in CBI interview is taking place, held by the characters of Ajay (Akshay Kumar) and Sharma (Anupam Kher). The film then goes into flashback.

It's later revealed that Ajay and Sharma are fake CBI officers and they had a team to conduct such fake raids. After this, they move to their respective states and lead their normal life. Ajay's fiance Priya (Kajal Aggarwal) is introduced. Ranveer (Jimmy Shergill) and Shanti (Divya Dutta) are shocked that they were fooled by the wrong information given to them. Ranveer decides to catch this gang led by Ajay. He contacts CBI officer Waseem Khan (Manjoy Bajpayee) who lives in Delhi with his family. Together they set out in search of the gang.
